Unwrapping a Review of GABE, book two in the Men of Clifton Montana series by Susan Fisher-Davis

I’m very excited because one of my clients, Susan Fisher-Davis, has a brand new release coming on Monday, November 3rd – GABE, book two in the Men of Clifton Montana series. My love of this book might be a bit biased but in putting on my reader cap, I’m going to be as honest and unscripted in my review as possible. It’s really good though!!

Blurb for GABE:

Gabe Stone can’t get Emma Conner out of his mind, even though he knows she’s not the kind of woman to settle for a fling. Having known Emma all her life, he never noticed how grown up she’d become - until now.

Emma has been in love with Gabe forever. When he finally shows her the attention she’s always hoped for, she falls even deeper in love with him, and soon discovers she’s pregnant. Gabe does right by her. He marries her, and eagerly awaits their baby, but Emma can’t help but wonder if he will ever love her or only the baby?

When danger revisits Clifton, Montana, Gabe discovers the heart can hold a lot of love. But he wonders if he can convince Emma his love is real. And if he succeeds, will she love him in return?

*                      *                       *                       *                      *

Emma Conner has been in love with Gabe Stone for so long she cannot imagine being in love with anyone else, but since she’s grown up he seems to do whatever he can to steer clear of her - until recently, that is. Ever since a crazy man kidnapped and nearly killed her friend, Becca, Gabe has been hanging around and when he seduces her, Emma is done for completely. Her heart completely belongs to Gabe but she refuses to allow him control until she discovers she’s pregnant. Gabe takes control all right, he insists on marrying her and won’t take no for answer.

Gabe Stone never thought about settling down but ever since he held little Emma Conner in his arms after she was nearly brutalized by a mad man, he can’t seem to get her out of his head. She is not the kind of woman he could just have casual sex with, but he desires her more than he could ever imagine. When she succumbs to his advances, he finds himself nearly obsessed with her but when she learns she’s pregnant, he knows he can never let her or the baby go. When someone threatens her life, he discovers he would never allow anyone or anything hurt the woman who has claimed his heart.

GABE by Susan Fisher-Davis is a wonderful story about discovering your perfect match is right under your nose where you just hadn’t thought to look before. Gabe is a rough and tumble kind of guy but Emma brings out the caring, tender, and very reliable side no one else really thought was there. Susan has created a family and town of people who endear themselves to your heart quickly and honestly. Clifton, Montana is an imaginary place but one you’ll wish exists for its homespun, welcoming feel and the Stone brothers, well, they're the men you wish truly existed.

I admit as the editor of this story, I watched Gabe and Emma come to life but sincerely, this is a story which will keep you turning the pages, and cheering this at first unlikely couple on to their happily ever after. We get to revisit the characters we met in JAKE and are introduced to a few new ones. We’re treated to steamy love scenes between Gabe and Emma, which will make you smile as Gabe introduces the innocent Emma to things she’d only dreamed about doing. And of course, there’s the incorrigible Olivia Roberts who as a friend and defender, keeps Emma on her toes, and Gabe’s eyes on her for fear of losing precious body parts.

I highly recommend GABE by Susan Fisher-Davis to everyone but if you read JAKE, you’ll definitely want to read GABE. For everyone else, GABE as well as JAKE do very well as stand-alone reads. If you love a good romance with humor, sexy love scenes, and a couple who you know are destined for each other and you want more than anything to see them stay together, then GABE is for you.

Happy Reading Everyone!

Unwrapping a Review of KEEP ME SAFE, a Slow Burn novel by Maya Banks

Being an Avon Addict has its amazing perks, and one of the best is that on occasion Avon Romance sends us print copies of new books. Most recently, we were sent a print copy of the newly released KEEP ME SAFE, book one in the Slow Burn series by Maya Banks. I’m always up for reading anything by Maya Banks and so was very excited to read the first book of a new series. Unfortunately, it was more disappointing than satisfying.

***print copy provided by publisher in exchange for an honest and unscripted review.

Blurb for KEEP ME SAFE:

A sizzling story of a woman who risks her life and her heart to find a wealthy man’s missing sister—the first novel in a sexy new romantic suspense series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks

When Caleb Devereaux's younger sister is kidnapped, this scion of a powerful and wealthy family turns to an unlikely source for help: a beautiful and sensitive woman with a gift for finding answers others cannot.

While Ramie can connect to victims and locate them by feeling their pain, her ability comes with a price. Every time she uses it, it costs her a piece of herself. Helping the infuriatingly attractive and impatient Caleb successfully find his sister nearly destroys her. Even though his sexual intensity draws her like a magnet, she needs to get as far away from him as she can.

Deeply remorseful for the pain he’s caused, Caleb is determined to make things right. But just when he thinks Ramie's vanished forever, she reappears. She’s in trouble and she needs his help. Now, Caleb will risk everything to protect her—including his heart. . . .

*                    *                    *                      *                      *

His sister is missing, and desperation forces Caleb Devereaux to seek out the one person he believes can help find her before it’s too late. Ramie St. Claire is on the run for her life and just when she thinks she’s hidden herself away, a man finds her hiding place, forces his sister’s scarf into her hands and she’s pulled back into the world she’s tried so hard to escape. He gets what he came for and leaves to rescue his sister with a promise to return after seeing what the event has done to her. Ramie isn’t going to wait for him or the evil hunting her. A year later, the evil does find her and after narrowly escaping him, she calls on Caleb Devereaux for help since he was responsible for forcing her out of hiding.

Now under Caleb’s protection he promises to keep her safe, but can he? Can he protect her from an evil, which has invaded her thoughts, her dreams, and knows her every move? Determined to fight back, she allows herself to be drawn into the hunt only to discover the evil may have abilities she can’t battle, at least not on her own.

KEEP ME SAFE by Maya Banks is an exciting, edge of the seat thriller but there were far too many things about it, which kept me from truly enjoying it. The premise of the story was excellent. I loved the idea of a psychic connection between the heroine and the demented serial killer hunting her, but the romance and the way the story played out, left me with less than a happy reading experience.

I had a major problem with Caleb building his affection for Ramie on guilt and a sense of obligation to keep her safe rather than on truly getting to know her, and care about her. He kept telling her that he owed her. Ramie never did give me a sense of falling in love with Caleb even though she tells him she does. It’s as if she felt she needed to give into whatever he wanted because she had nowhere to go, no one to help and protect her, and so felt her own sense of obligation toward him for what he was doing for her. Yes, there was attraction, but Caleb even admitted how frail, how skinny, and how sickly Ramie appeared yet he was lusting after her. I had a problem with that.

The continuity of the story was another matter. I felt there were holes in the story and at times it seemed as if what was happening in a scene was forgotten and when the action changed, the reader was left with a – huh?? A major huh moment happened in a particularly important scene when Ramie and Caleb were in bed together, sleeping and naked, an explosion rocks the house. His brother bursts into the room, and then the rest of the family comes through the bedroom to escape through the window – there is never any mention of Caleb getting dressed, much less dressing the poor, out cold Ramie. A huge HUH??

The suspense part of KEEP ME SAFE by Maya Banks was the best part of the book, although the descriptions of what Ramie, and later Caleb, actually experienced while their minds traveled across the psychic universe, so to speak, left a lot to be desired. Caleb was so shocked at what Ramie experiences, but the only thing the reader is really told about is a hand print on her face. The suspense was still enough to keep me going, turning the pages to find out what happens next, but the rest of it had me skimming to get to the action. This could have been an amazing story but I feel it was rushed and the characters weren’t allowed to grow within themselves and get to know each other, but rather the more important thing seemed to be to get to the end. As to the ending, it all happened so fast that I actually went back, and read the chapter again, because I thought I’d missed something.

I’d like to recommend KEEP ME SAFE by Maya Banks, but this is not necessarily one I’d call a must read. It's not Maya Banks at her best. I will say that if you’re interested in a thrilling, edge of the seat suspense with minimal shock factor, this is one for you. Many times the first book in a series is its weakest link, and so I will reserve judgment on the Slow Burn series until I have a chance to read the next ones. I’m hoping somewhere down the line to see Caleb’s sister, Tori, get pulled back into the world of the living by Dane. If you want to know what I’m referencing, you’ll have to read the book.

Happy Reading Everyone!

Stop on the Tasty Virtual Book Tour for UNMASKING LOVE, a Holiday for Romance Novel by Peggy Bird + #Giveaway

Welcome to my review stop on the Tasty Virtual Book Tour for UNMASKING LOVE, a Holiday for Romance novel by Peggy Bird. Already a huge fan of Peggy’s amazing characters and stories, I am truly enjoying this series built around holiday fun. Can you guess which holiday we are treated to in this one? Stay tuned for a fun giveaway after my review.

***eARC provided by author in exchange for an honest and unscripted review

Blurb for UNMASKING LOVE:

Getting a life do-over in the small theater town of Ashland, Oregon, has suited lawyer Julie Payne to a T. After ten years in the Portland prosecutor’s office, she’s enjoying her new, easy lifestyle, and she’s not looking for any complications.

Trace Watkins comes to town seeking the same refuge from life as a big city banker. A new job might make Ashland his permanent address, and he likes what he sees of the place, especially when he meets Julie one hot Halloween night.The sparks fly instantly between the costumed couple, and Julie and Trace waste no time connecting beneath the sheets while literally hiding behind their masks.

But when the holiday hook-up ends, their real identities present a serious snag: Trace manages the bank Julie happens to be suing. The only way they can turn this trick into a treat is if both of them are willing to face their pasts and finally bury the skeletons in their closets.

*                  *                   *                   *                   *

Julie ‘Greer’ Payne feels she has no choice but to leave her dream position in the Portland prosecutor’s office after falling victim to the manipulations of a man who she believed cared for her. On the way home to California, car trouble sidelines her in Ashland, Oregon. In just the few days she spends in this wholesome and inviting town, Julie decides it’s as good a place as any to start over – new job, new name (she drops Greer for her true name, Juliet/Julie), and very quickly makes new friends. Life is good and when Halloween comes, she decides to throw a party to get to know the rest of the town.

Trace Watkins comes to Ashland with the idea of a new job, and a quieter life from that in Portland. It happens to be Halloween and his old college buds talk him into dressing as a Shakespearean character and going with them to a Halloween party. Only planning to stay a short time, he has no interest in such things until he sees his Juliet across the room. Mesmerized and intrigued, he must find out who she is and meet her. When she disappears and the crowd moves outside to watch a parade, he finds her again. What happens next is only the beginning of a wonderful romance, a town mystery, and a steamy love match as sweet as any amount of Halloween treats, or is it all just a trick of the heart?

UNMASKING LOVE by Peggy Bird is a fun, sweet, romantic, and definitely deliciously sexy story centered around one of the most fun holidays, and when Margo Keyes and her hubby, Tony Alessandro show up, everything comes to head. I can't help but thank the writing gods for Peggy's decision to put Trace and Tony in the same pages. (I have a huge crush on Tony.) I only wished he’d hung around a little longer, although having sexy Trace around made up for it. The banter between Trace and Julie is fun, intimate, teasing, and very sexy.

I enjoy the way Peggy has branched this series out of her original Second Chance series so we are treated to visits with those wonderful characters as well as making new acquaintances. Great characters I don’t mind visiting with any time. Tony can come to my house whenever he wants and stay as long as he wishes.

I highly recommend treating yourself to the wonderful and sweet holiday romance, UNMASKING LOVE by Peggy Bird. You might even think yourself tricked a bit when you find out there’s a bit of evil lurking among the pages. I have to admit I was only half tricked, but it was definitely part of the fun.

Happy Reading Everyone!

Unwrapping a Review of JUDGMENT, a Cassidy & Spenser Thriller novel by Carey Baldwin

I’ve become a huge fan of romantic suspense author, Carey Baldwin so when her newest thriller, JUDGMENT, a Cassidy & Spenser Thriller released this month, I knew I had to buy my copy and read it as soon as I could fit into my schedule. It was absolutely worth the wait.

***purchased a copy for my personal reading and am sharing my honest and unscripted review.

Blurb for JUDGMENT:

Carey Baldwin, author of the thrilling novel Confession, returns with a new story featuring two of her most beloved characters. Fans of Tess Gerritsen and Lisa Gardner will devour this riveting story of rivals caught in a killer's twisted web.

When a coed falls prey to a sadistic murderer, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Caitlin "Caity" Cassidy and Special Agent Atticus Spenser are called in to testify--one for the defense, one for the prosecution. With warring approaches to justice, these two rivals have been butting heads for years--both inside the courtroom and out. And at first, this case appears to be no different.

But when a brutal attack leaves the accused man dead and Caity in critical condition, petty differences take a backseat to saving lives. As the lone survivor, Caity knows too much, and the killer--a madman calling himself the Man in the Maze--is coming back for round two. Now Caity and Spense must join forces to uncover the killer's identity before Caity's time--and luck--runs out.

*                *                *               *               *

Dr. Caitlin Cassidy watched her father executed for a crime she still believes he did not commit. Now when she becomes a near victim of a murderer who may or may not be a serial killer, she wants more than ever to prove her father’s innocence when it appears there may be a connection.

Special Agent Atticus Spenser, Spense to those who don’t want a punch in the face, has the hots for Caity Cassidy and doesn’t hold back from letting her know it. He’s more than pleased to be working closely with her as well as acting as her personal bodyguard after she was nearly killed by the same man who killed her father’s lawyer, Harold Baumgartner. He understands Caity better than she knows and wants to protect her, even if only from herself.

Working together, against odds neither had counted on, Caity and Spense get closer to discovering the truth about the elusive Man in the Maze, which may change everything. With Spense at her back, his skills as a profiler assisting her, Caity begins to piece together a puzzle, which throws her in the line of fire again, and again. Can Spense keep her safe while still doing his doing job? He can only hope so.

JUDGMENT by Carey Baldwin is edge of the seat thrilling. A real whodunit puzzle, which just when you think you know who the Man in the Maze really is, you discover you don’t. The sexual tension between Caity and Spense is so thick you might need more than a knife to cut through it, yet they commit themselves to holding back on any romantic shenanigans until after they solve this exasperating mystery. It doesn’t mean they’re not tempted on occasion though. Yes, I generally like a little more romance with my suspense but honestly, the mystery is so compelling, I didn’t really miss it. This one would satisfy the most expectant mystery lover. The only real issue I had was, well, the number of bodies don’t seem to add up. Read it and see if you catch what I’m talking about because if I try to explain, I might spoil the fun.

I highly recommend JUDGMENT, a Cassidy & Spenser Thriller by Carey Baldwin to anyone who loves a good whodunit, edge of the seat thriller without too much gruesome detail but a whole lot of clues, misdirection, and of course, action. I can’t wait to see what Carey gives us next – more Cassidy & Spenser, I hope.

Happy Reading Everyone!

*                 *                 *                *                *

Excerpt:

He went to work on his shirt buttons. His collar was soon wide open revealing a generous show of muscular chest that make her hands itch to rip it off him. She diverted her gaze and curled her itchy hands by her sides.

“Have no fear, cowboy,” Nikki replied in a tone meant to disguise the warm flush that had come over her. “I corralled all my wild impulses long ago.”

“Did you, now?” He still stood in doorway, head cocked. “Somehow, I think you may have missed a few strays.”

“Maybe I need to make myself clearer. I have an aversion to cocky cowboys.”
Just keep telling yourself that, Nikki. Maybe if you repeat it often enough it’ll become true.

“Is that so?” His brows flew upward. “I can’t say I ever met a woman with an actual aversion to me.”

“Don’t take it personally. It’s nothing against you in particular, but to your type.”

“And what do you think you know about my type?”

“Since I don’t have a pole handy, enough to keep you at arms-length. Besides that, this whole line of conversation is entirely inappropriate in light of professional ethics, don’t you think? You are my attorney, after all.”

“Well, darlin’,” he scratched his unshaven jaw, “there’s a little hitch to that.”

“What do you mean? You said you’d help me.”

“And I will, but you can’t engage my professional services until I know who you are.”

“I’ve told you who I am!” she insisted.

“Sweetheart, I’m a lawyer, and according to the law, your claim don’t weigh without authentication.”

“Authentication?”

“Proof.”

“So what are you saying? That you don’t believe me?”

“I’m not saying that at all. Only that our professional relationship will commence once you get your I.D. In the interim,” His gaze slid over her in a way that threatened to melt her insides, “you’d best find yourself a nice, long, sturdy pole.”

Unwrapping a Review of A MOMENT OF PASSION, book 2 of the Ladies' Book of Pleasures series by Jess Michaels

Tomorrow, book two in the Ladies’ Book of Pleasures series by Jess Michaels is releasing and if you haven’t tried this new erotic historical romance series yet, DO! A MOMENT OF PASSION by Jess Michaels is a delightful new installment to the series and keeps us wondering who the author of the scandalous, and highly informative, Ladies’ Book of Pleasures is – although I have my suspicions.

***eARC provided by author in exchange for an honest and unscripted review

Blurb for A MOMENT OF PASSION:

A lady in the ballroom…a lover in the bedroom.

The Ladies' Book of Pleasures, Book 2

When Lady Jacinda unwraps a scandalous birthday gift, she’s sure the anonymous giver is playing a cruel joke. The Ladies’ Book of Pleasures may be responsible for one gossiped-about marriage, but for a lady ruined by a rogue and shunned by society, Jacinda is doomed to a lonely, loveless future.

Worse, as she pages through the volume of passionate promises, she is observed by the wicked and dangerous Duke of Carnthorn—and now he is stalking her as a possible willing victim of his shocking preferences.

Jason, Earl of Northfield, is having none of it. Jacinda, keeper of his most painful secret, is a friend he will not abandon to a wolf like Carnthorn. As they embark on a pretend courtship—for her own protection, of course—their proper decorum in public melts into wicked passion in the bedroom.

But even as real feelings begin to develop between them, Carnthorn is watching. He is not convinced. And he is determined to possess Jacinda, no matter whom he has to destroy…

Warning: This book contains friends turning to lovers, a highly erotic secret affair, and a wicked villain who will destroy what he cannot have.

*             *              *               *               *

Happy for her dear friend, Isabel for finding love when she thought she never would, Lady Jacinda Downing wants the same for herself but knows it truly never will happen because she is completely ruined. When invited to a party being held by Isabel and her new husband, she reluctantly attends only to discover it’s a surprise birthday party for Jacinda. Her darling friends, Isabel and Grace, turn a normally ignored day into something very special. When she receives a gift from an anonymous guest, she’s shocked and amazed that it’s a copy of the scandalous Ladies’ Book of Pleasures. Even more humiliating is to have been seen looking at it by the dashing Duke of Carnthorn, who later makes her an offer which shocks her sensibilities yet gives her pause for thought when the suggestion may be her only chance for freedom without any chance of marriage.

Jason, Earl of Northfield has sworn to never marry but when his darling friend, Jacinda Downing tells him of an offer to become the mistress of the notoriously cruel Duke of Carnthorn, he decides he must save her from a terrible fate. He convinces her to allow him to make her attractive to marriage-minded men despite her ruined past. Pretending to court her brings her attention, secrets revealed, and a passion neither he nor Jacinda can deny or ignore.

A MOMENT OF PASSION by Jess Michaels is sweet, endearing, and contains enough passion my reader cut out on me twice the first night I was reading. Whether from the words on the screen or just a fluke, who cares, the steam was coming off the pages as soon as Jason and Jacinda entered their pact to find her a good husband. Although at times predictable, it doesn’t matter because the story flows so well, speeding through the pages guided by informative advice from the Ladies’ Book of Pleasures, which translate easily to every woman in any era, that I was glued to it.

It’s a joy to revisit Isabel and Grace as well as Jason and Seth. If you haven’t read book one, A MATTER OF SIN, absolutely do – Isabel and Seth fire up those pages too. Jess creates such wonderful three-dimensional characters that they nearly spring from the pages to sit beside you as you learn their stories.

I highly recommend this wonderful erotic historical romance from the mistress of erotic romance, Jess Michaels. A MOMENT OF PASSION will keep you turning the pages, anticipating Jason’s midnight visits, and wondering just who the intriguing author of the Ladies’ Book of Pleasures truly is and when we’ll discover the truth. I can’t wait to read book three, A MEASURE OF DECEIT – Lady Grace’s story – expected to release in December.

Happy Reading Everyone!

A MOMENT OF PASSION, a Ladies’ Book of Pleasures novel by Jess Michaels, Samhain Publishing, releasing October 14, 2014, available in ebook formats at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Kobobooks.

About the Author:

From Susan Fisher-Davis --

I've been writing for years but I never thought my stories were good enough to get published. I had actually given up writing for a year when I decided to give it another try. Through Facebook, I met Amy Valentini, an editor. (Thanks for the plug, Sue!) We became friends and once I completed my book, I sent it to her for editing. I believe that without her, I wouldn't have gotten a contract. I submitted my manuscript to five publishing houses and three wanted it. After a few days, I decided to go with Secret Cravings Publishing. This company is amazing. The owner, Sandy Lea Sullivan has the patience of a Saint. I ask her so many questions, I'm surprised she hasn't blocked my email. I always get the same answer from her when I apologize for bothering her, "It's what I'm here for." Amazing! I have a three-year contract with them and if at all possible, I will stay with them after that.

I have two series coming out. The Men of Clifton, Montana and The Bad Boys of Dry River. Cowboys and bad boys...what more could a woman want? I hope you enjoy my books. The Bad Boys of Dry River will begin in January 2015. I'm so pleased with the reviews JAKE is getting. If you read any of my books, please leave a review on the site where you purchased the book. Have a wonderful day!

Dance Like No One's Watching Because You Can

In TWELFTH NIGHT, William Shakespeare says,
“If music be the food of love, play on,
Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken, and so die.”

And in TWILIGHT OF THE IDOLS, Friedrich Nietzsche says, “Without music, life would be a mistake.”

And even Albert Einstein admitted, “If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.”

Music is a part of our past, our present and more than likely, our future. Music is a part of every celebration from lullabies to funeral hymns. We remember nearly every event in our life by a song we heard at the time, or which reminds of us of that event. Happy Birthday is significant to every one of us because of the memories of cumulative birthdays. Songs mark our coming of age, our first dates, weddings, and many other joys.

Admittedly, some songs mark our darkest moments as well but instead of dwelling on the sadness of the moment, a song can remind us of the love and memory of the person being celebrated as when a favorite song of a deceased loved one is played at a funeral. It lifts the spirit, makes us smile, and gives us permission to know with confidence whenever we hear that tune, we will remember the person with joy and love.

The past year hasn’t been an easy one for me. If you don’t already know, I got a divorce this year. I ended one chapter in my life, have started a new one, as well as embarked on a new venture: Romancing Editorially.
There’s been a lot of changes, a lot of adjustments, some loneliness, but also a chance to rediscover myself and enjoy my being on my own again. The one constant in my life has been music. I know a lot of folks are tired of hearing HAPPY by Pharrell Williams, but it lifted my spirits when nothing else would and certainly was a great help in my healing. So I'll always love this song and when I hear it, I dance.

Music is my joy. They say dance like nobody's watching, and I believe in this. March to the tune of your own drum is another good one, which has always guided me. I’ve never been one to follow others and whereas, some may say you must have a plan in life, like a good tune you never know where life is going to take you. I like it that way and so am excited about the future.

So with memories of tunes marking days gone by, I'm moving on. Some songs I still love to hear even while they had great significance to my wedding, and even while others now mark the dark hours following the end of the marriage, I still find solace, inspiration, and love in music. And yes, I’m going to continue to dance like no one’s watching because I can, and that’s who I am.

What does music say to you? And do you dance like nobody’s watching?

Happy Reading Everyone, or should I say? Happy Listening and Dancing!
I would dance like this guy! Would you?
